Acute and Emergency Care
Nurses in the EGH are certified annually to ensure their knowledge and
skills are kept current. They also take advantage of all possible
educational opportunities. The nurses in the ER are trained in Advanced
Cardiac Life Support, Trauma nursing and Pediatric Life support. They
have knowledge and skills in all necessary fields of patient care. The
equipment in these departments is modern and checked regularly. Doctors
and nurses consult with specialists to deliver the best patient care.
Multidisciplinary rounds are held twice weekly to plan the best care
for patients in Acute Care. In preparation for discharge, patients
receive health teaching for medications, care of wounds and other
information, as well as referrals to available home care services.
There is also a Cancer Care Centre at EGH which is affiliated with the
North Eastern Ontario Regional Cancer Centre. Standard protocol,
private rooms and access to an oncologist ensure that quality cancer
care is provided.

community avoiding expensive, stressful traveling. The patient 'visits'
with the physician through a video - monitor system. The patient and
physician can see and hear each other, while the nurse assists with the
exam. Physicians are able to listen to the patient's heart via a
computerized stethoscope. The network also provides continuing health
professional education and patient education.D Dr. Stephanie Borsato is
